Model Paint Ideas
Webmaster Dave
"I personally prefer the lighter ModelFlex Reefer Orange for road power. Some people prefer a darker BNSF type Orange. I've used ModelFlex Rail Brown for the brown switcher color, and a mixture of CNW Green and Erie Yellow to make the green switcher color. I added drops of yellow to the green and did tests until I liked it. DMIR Yellow works for handrails, and ATSF Silver for the 'pre-stripe scheme' tanks and trucks. I've found that colors will usually look darker on models than the real thing. This is mostly due to lack of light".Century628
"I've gotten good results with Floquil Reefer Orange, with a speck of red to deepen it".Kam Miller
"For brown I use Floquil Rail Brown. For Orange, I use Reefer Orange with a few drops of Reefer White to tone it down a little. For the early Green I use Floquil Light Green".Roger
"Mill Brown: Badger ModelFlex, 3 parts #16-62 DRG&W Gold & 2 parts #16-133 Gloss Brown. 'Old' Green (1950's-1960's): Floquil Marine #818690 Caprail Green. 'Old' Orange (Pre 1990's): Testors Model Masters, 1 part #2022 International Orange & 4 parts #2023 Blue Angles Yellow. 'Weathered' Orange: Polly Scale, 1 part #414392 & 1 part #404094. EJ&E Orange: Badger AccuFlex, 4 parts GN Orange & 1 part L&N Yellow."Gregory Schmuldt
"I have done several road units... Airbrush base coat Floquil Reefer Orange, with a light coat of Krylon Popsicle safety orange. A light mist overcoat will slightly darken the Reefer Orange and provide a gloss surface for decals. Or: 7 to 1 ratio of Reefer Orange and Reefer Yellow, mix and apply using airbrush, let dry overnight and apply high gloss, decal, then apply satin or dull coat. The older units would be the 7 to 1 ratio, where as the new units with the white stripes tend to have more of a darker orange. My favorite for this is Reefer Orange and Krylon Orange".
