Notes: This is the Bridge #198 interlocking looking West from Joliet Yard. The train is on the main track in the yard, and the track on the left is called the "coke oven", which is a leftover name from the old steel mill days in Joliet.

Notes: Looking west just past Bridge 198. The switch and track leading from the main track to the right goes to the Romeoville Branch.


Subject: Material Service Yard on Romeoville Branch

Notes: This yard is about halfway to the generator on the Romeoville Branch. Material Service loads these cars with stone for Peter Baker at Rondout.

Notes: The roundhouse was originally built with a total of 31 bays, but only the last 5 bays shown here are used in modern day.

Notes: These shots were taken from the road overpass at the South end of the yard looking North. The small red building is the switchman's building. The track that runs next to it on the right is the run through main track.

     

Subject: Main Administration "O&O" Building

Notes: This building holds the offices for the dispatcher, EJ&E police, labor relations, and other administrative departments. Offices were also created downstairs for train crew members around the time of this photo, after they were moved from the old "White House" building.

 

Subject: Kerr McGee Plant - Cleanup Car Siding
Location: West Chicago, IL
Date: 9/19/2000

Notes: Shot during a hazardous material cleanup project to remove radio active waste soil that was left on the property. A siding was built to hold specially outfitted cars that were used to transport the tainted soil. The soil was taken to a dump site in Utah where it was treated and disposed of. You can see the motorized unit that was used to move the cars in and out of the loader.

Notes: This shot shows the pit where all the tainted soil had been removed from the property. This was only 1/3 of the depth that it would eventually go to.


Subject: White House Building

Notes: This was the crew building in Joliet Yard until they finished a new area for crews in the basement of the O&O building. The "White House" building was closed after that. When heavy rains came in the mid 90's, the creek that runs underneath the yard overflowed and the water almost flooded basement.

Notes: If you look about 8 feet in the canal you can see the indentations where the lock doors were mounted.


Subject: Old Rock Island Tower

Notes: Located at what was originally the Rock Island crossing with the EJ&E. "The Rock" tower has been closed for years. These photos show the remnants of the control pipes that worked the switches from the tower. The track nearest the tower is the J main. The other track is the former eastbound main when it was a double main. That's now called the east end lead.

Subject: Coal Hill in the Gary Mill Yard (Looking West)
Location: USS Gary Works - Gary, IN

Notes: The USS Coke Plant is in the background. The track on the left is called the East Dixie. The next track curving to the left with no cars is the lead to the River Yard. Looking straight ahead is the South Lead. The next track to the right is the North Lead. The track on the far right, running by the pile of coke goes to 'N' Yard, and the North or South side of the coke batteries. Many years ago this track would have also gone to the Tube Mill, long since gone. The yard engine takes 30 cars of coal, and sets them into the dumper. There are retarders in the dumper to hold the cars and control them as they're dumped one at a time.

Notes: This is the farthest East you can go on the railroad. This track ends East of the USS Coke Facility in Gary Works. The Gary City Track to the South goes almost as far, but not quite.

Notes: Numerous locomotives are seen parked outside Relco's small shop. Many different types of units were brought back and forth to Relco on the EJ&E over the years. Quite a few J units even ended up here.

Subject: Plaines Generator (Joliet Generating)

Notes: This isn't located along the EJ&E RoW, but it's a place the J sends trains to. UP trains coming on at West Chicago come down through 'H' Yard and onto the CN/IC main to get to the generator. The large hole in the side of the building was from an explosion that had happened a few weeks earlier.

Subject: Signs Protect Construction Crews

Notes: An Eastbound train approaches work being done to replace the bridge at Hartsdale. The first shot is the 'Form B' yellow-red board, indicating the construction ahead. The next board is red, placed just before the work being done. The last board past the construction is green.

Notes: The new bridge had just been installed. This was the second train to go over it. A 10 MPH speed restriction was in place until everything checked out.

Notes: These are the lead-up bridges just East of Bridge 198. There are two builders plates... The one straight ahead on the main track was built in 1912. The one on the left was built in 1916.
