Official Company Archive Photos: Diesel Locomotives Page 2
This page covers the old railroad archive diesel photos that were available. Unfortunately, it appears that many other photos were probably pilfered from the RR over the years. I assume that is why there are only end shots of these units in many cases. Side shots were probably also taken at the same time, but they disappeared over the years. These photos are not to be used in any way, without the consent of the site owner. (9/14/13 While finishing this page today, I learned of the passing of EJ&E fan and list member, Ken Lanovich. This page is dedicated to Ken.)

Subject: Baldwin VO1000 #476
Location: Unknown
Date: 3/27/1964

Notes: A close shot of the front showing a large plow mounted at the time. The paint scheme looks to be the brown, and recently applied.

Notes: Shown in the orange/black/silver scheme.

Subject: SD9 #600 Shown New
Location: Unknown

Notes: This photo looks to show #600 when it first arrived. The EJ&E only purchased three SD9s new, and they all had the sharp looking green over orange paint scheme.

Notes: A shot showing #600 after it had been broken in a bit.

Subject: EMD SD9 #600 Being Delivered
Location: Unknown
Date: ?/?/1957
Credit: Unknown

Notes: Looking all shiny, this shows #600 being delivered, along with two new GTW GP9s as well... #4558 and 4559. Note GTW #4558 on the right. New units were often interchanged onto the Lake Front Line, via BOCT or IHB.

Subject: Alco RS-2 #800 in Green over Orange Picking Up #600
Location: Unknown
Date: ?/?/1957
Credit: Unknown

Notes: A very rare look at one of the RS-2s in the green over orange scheme. This is the same event as the photo above. #800 is seen working a Kirk Yard transfer job, picking up new EMD units, which includes: GTW GP9 #4559, EJ&E SD9 #600, GTW GP9 #4558, and a fourth unit. Note the transfer cab as well. New units were often interchanged onto the Lake Front Line, via BOCT or IHB.

Subject: EMD SD9 #601 (Side View)
Location: Unknown
Date: Unknown Credit: Unknown

Notes: Notice the lack of dynamic brake blisters on the 600-602 units.

Subject: EMD SD38 #650 New
Location: Unknown
Date: Unknown
Credit: Unknown

Notes: This photo appears to show the unit 'as delivered'. Notice how the tabs on the frame that come down over the trucks, were also masked off and painted silver. A second SD38 looks to be coupled in front of 650.

Subject: EMD SD9 #606 in New Paint
Location: East Joliet Yard - Joliet, IL
Date: Unknown Credit: Unknown

Notes: These two shots show the 606 right after it had been painted in J colors. The location is next to the roundhouse. Center Cab #711 is to the right. This unit came from the DM&IR originally.

Subject: EMD SD38-2 #664 New (Front and Back)
Location: East Joliet Yard - Joliet, IL
Date: ?/?/1975 Credit: Unknown

Notes: This picture was taken out in front of the roundhouse. The unit looks to have just been delivered at the time.

Subject: EMD GP38-2 #702, 701 & 703
Location: East Joliet Yard - Joliet, IL
Date: 1972/73 Credit: Unknown

Notes: These shots in front of the roundhouse, look to have been taken around the time of the GP order delivery.

Subject: Alco RS-2 #802
Location: Kirk Yard - Gary, IN
Date: Unknown
Credit: Unknown

Notes: Judging by the condition of the unit, this may have been taken after they were parked in the dead line, at the end of their time on the railroad.

Subject: Alco RS-2 #801 in New Paint
Location: Unknown
Date: Unknown
Credit: Unknown

Notes: In direct contrast to the photo above, this shows #801 in new paint, with plenty of life left. Notice the difference in the shade of orange when new, compared to years later.

Subject: EMD SD9 #609 Damage Repair
Location: Kirk Yard - Gary, IN
Date: ?/??1973 Credit: Unknown

Notes: This shot shows #609 outside the roundhouse, after having it's front end repaired from a collision that happened on the Lake Front Line, in March of 1973. Dave N. notes: "Engine 609 and a 300 unit were pulling an ore train to South Chicago when the ore train, moving in yard limits, hit some railcars near Youngstown. Note that the 609 at this point does not have an SD9 fuel tank -- it ran around for months with a small, square 600-gallon tank, like the ones under the NW2s."
